SUMMER EDITION: WORKING FROM ITALY

A change of scenery helps with overcoming creative blocks and achieving the sometimes-needed distance to put our efforts into perspective. And where else is the muse closer to our creative spirit than in Italy? Of course, you can just go to a WeWork. But you can also co-work in style. We collected a list of the most beautiful public working spaces from Milan to Rome.

The co-working at Section80 was our temporary office in Milan.

Best public working spots from Milan to Rome:

  • Section80, during the day a co-working space with an extensive collection of art and design books showcasing the work of local artists, by night a listening bar with a fine selection of vinyl. On every table, you find paper and pens for spontaneous creative outbursts. Via Carlo Farini, 44, Milano.

  • Feltrinelli Foundation Reading Room, in a shared building with Microsoft, the Feltrinelli foundation is open to the public. Located on the top floor is the beautiful reading room with a collection of books, WiFi and desks. Viale Pasubio, 5, Milano.

  • The Hoxton Courtyard, the interior is confusingly similar to Soho House, but unlike Soho House, Hoxton Hotel is open to the public. The café's airy courtyard is perfect for working. L.go B. Marcello, 220, Roma.

  • Maxxi Museo, the wide open space of the museum building by Zaha Hadid has a café with fast WiFi and big tables to sketch and discuss. Via Guido Reni, 4a, Roma.

SLOW PRODUCTIVITY

The average person checks their email on a workday every 6 minutes. Slack, Emails and Zoom meetings help us to talk about work but what can we actually do to create better? In line with our trip to Italy, we explored the principles of Slow Productivity as stated by Cal Newport, who teaches Computer Science at the University of Georgetown and writes about the intersection of technology, culture and productivity. Instead of seeing busyness as an indication of useful efforts, he advocates three principles to create meaningful output:

  1. Do fewer things

  2. Work at a natural and steady pace

  3. Obsess over quality

MEMBER STORIES

In our series Creative Entrepreneurs we are portraying members from the NeueHaus community.

Simon‘s work: Art with Code and beautiful websites

“The creative industry allows for—and benefits from—the blending of skills and perspectives. Being 'a jack of all trades' isn't a shortcoming but an asset.“ We sat down with Simon Riisnaes Dagfinrud, an Amsterdam-based Creative Developer. Previously at WeTransfer‘s Creative Studio working for clients like Netflix, Gucci and Alexander McQueen, he is now building his own legacy as a freelancer. Find the full story on NeueRead.

What we found inspiring this month:

“You know, the uglier the art, the more it's worth” — After Hours, a movie by Martin Scorsese (1985), which reminded us that seemingly small decisions can change everything, every day, every moment.

All the best,

Your NeueHaus Team
